London to Cardiff 24
30th/31st May
A team of 12 CRC runners and 4 supporters set off at 7.25pm from near Twickenham in London on the evening of 30th May, with the intention of running a relay race to cover the 160 miles to Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, a feat that they achieved in just 25 hours and 11 minutes. This was an amazing achievement for a novice team, and we came 11th out of the 21 teams that took part. Each runner ran two individual legs and three group stages, usually accompanied by a supporter or another runner on a bike. The route took them through home territory, passing through Maidenhead at about 11pm, then onwards along the Ridgeway where we watched the sunrise at 5am at the Uffington Chalk Horse, over the Severn Bridge and through Newport to central Cardiff where the final group stage was a lap of honour around the Millennium Stadium and over the finishing line. What an experience for all involved! Various members of the team were interviewed during the race on Marlow FM and BBC Radio Berkshire, and there was coverage on Cookham.com and MumsAboutCookham. The runners were Steve Woodward, Carol Montgomery, Helen Krag, Sarah Parfitt, Ibet Stanley, Adam Burke, Sue Gauld, Tim Courtenay, Gerald Cooper, James Dickinson, Henning Wilken, and Tina Scanlon. They were supported by Lisa Fletcher, Sophia King, Deborah Heyward and Kelli Dickinson. Go Team Cookham!
