Steve Woodward Club Christmas Handicap
14th December

Almost 40 members took part in Christmas handicap which set off from the moor in Cookham and followed the river past Bourne End before looping back.  It was a little slippery underfoot but there were some great times, close finishes, and a great variety of fabulous christmas jumpers and festive outfits!  First to cross the line for the seniors was Karis Hunt, the full results can be found the file below.  The best senior performances were by Sarah Walker and James Dickinson who both finished in a time of 23:49, and the best junior time recorded was Louis Brown who finished in a fantastic 21:48.

Chiltern Cross Country League Milton Keynes
7th December

We had a small but impressive turn out for the most far-flung of the Chiltern Leagues in Milton Keynes, where the junior section did us proud! William Taylor-West continued his great form to finish 8th in the Div 2 Under 13 race followed by newcomer James Nickels who ran excellently to come home in 12th place (Div 2). In the Under 11 boys, Sam Hayes had his best run so far this season to finish 19th in the combined Div 1 and Div 2 race, 21 seconds ahead of Joseph Haslehurst (35th). Beth Murray improved to finish 24th in the Div 2 Under 13 girls while Holly Bird (91st) ran extremely well in the combined Div 1/Div 2 race for their age group.

Parkrun
7th December

We had a good showing at Black Park where Paddy’s beginner and improver groups ran the 5km Park Run and ALL but Paddy himself (who was pacing - his PB is 14.21!) ran PBs. First home was Tom Stevens (24.23) followed by Duncan Betts (27.44), Jamie Barber (31.26) and Kevin Farnborough (31.36). It was great to see Kate Durham back running (32.26), accompanying Suzy Malhotra (32.28) to a PB. Karen Wray also ran well (34.43).

Steve Woodward Club 5k Handicap
27th November

The turnout was small for the third race in the series, with four members competing.  Steve Woodward continues to dominate the race to come first, Kelli Dickinson was second, Adam Burke was third and Lisa Cooper fourth.

Berks Bucks and Oxon XC
16th November

A team of under 13 boys from the club headed to Buttersteep Forest, Bracknell to take part in the prestigious Berks, Bucks and Oxon cross country championship. This is a hotly contested event with several of the three counties’ strongest teams taking part. Freddie Yuill was first home for Cookham in 32nd place (13.44) on the tough, boggy course, followed by Sonny Lewis in 38th (14.31) and Tom Garner in 40th (15.55). Overall, the team finished a highly creditable 6th, all the more pleasing given that two of our closest rivals - Maidenhead AC and Wycombe Phoenix - failed to field three scorers. Well done boys.

Chiltern Cross Country League Oxford
9th November

We had a smaller turn out than last time due to various illnesses and injuries but still managed good scores ina number of the categories.  This course was shorter but with one massive and VERY muddy hill in the middle. Our U13 Boys were stars even with several runners missing through injury. Freddie Yuill was first home in 12th place (Div 2), closely followed by Sonny Lewis in 13th. Connor Barnes came home in 16th to place theteam 5th.

There were solid runs, also, from Emily Fisher and Beth Murray (26th and 27th in U13 Girls). In the U11 Girls one of our juniors ran well to finish 77th in her first XC, followed by Holly Gibson and Caitlin Murray (82nd and 83rd).

Our senior ladies were tremendous with Sarah Walker outstanding in 25th position backed by Kelli Dickinson (60th), Karis Hunt (62nd) and Helen Philip (75th). James Cotter was our only senior man but also had a great run.

Parkrun
2nd November

The Grim Duathlon
19th Oct

David Tindal did his first Duathlon on and picked a tough one to start with!  The race consisted of a 5 km trail run, a 20 km cycle ride, and a 5 km run.  The course was at a military site, with plenty of hazards to negotiate.  There was a net to crawl under, mud, and a lot of water features (waist deep water!) to negotiate.  The event had a real sense of challenge.  He reported that the Cookham Running club 5k races prepared him for the running legs, so he could judge how fast to go through each leg.  He was covered in mud, but the water features provided a good opportunities to wash it off.  Recommended for any runner who appreciates a more dramatic challenge during their race.

Bridget King also entered the Elite race and as a result has been selected to represent Team GB
in the Sprint Distance Duathlon European Championships in Horst next April. As we all all know, Bridget's success is very well deserved. The Cookham Super-Woman regularly manages to run to Black Park, beat everyone in the 5km and then cycle home - beating those of us in cars back to Cookham! We have long been amazed by her performances and it is so fantastic that her talent and perseverance have been acknowledged in this way. Well done Bridget - we are very proud of you!

Chiltern Cross Country League, Watford
19th Oct

We had a good turn out on this hilly course which looped around the park - the senior women ran approximately 6.5K on one loop through the woods to include two big hills, the men's 10k had them toil up them twice.  The field was extremely strong, with the winners posting some incredibly fast times, our results are  very impressive for our first outing.  Each fixture is a Mob Match with divisions 1 and 2 running together in one big race. As it’s our first season, we are in Div 2 along with 19 other clubs. Point scores are totted up throughout the season for the teams and there is an overall winner at the end. All of this makes our junior results astounding. Thanks to tremendous packing, our Under 13 boys were a tremendous 2nd place in Div 2 - just 7 points behind top club Bracknell AC. In the U11 girls race, there were great runs by everybody with a team placing of 3rd in Div 2 and even though our U13 Girls were missing their 3rd scorer for the team, their points tally placed them 6th team in Division 2. Well done Jess and Emily - I know how nervous you were!
In the U11 Boys race we were also missing 3 boys through injury and other sports commitments, yet Sam and Joseph’s performances placed them 2nd team in Div 2 even without a 3rd team member. Just imagine where you will finish next time, boys!

I have put the Div 2 position along with the overall placing from each race in brackets and the time.

Look closely and you might just be able to work out that this is no ordinary CRC raven-haired beauty.  Men's captain, Gerald Cooper took part in this fun event, a 5k around the streets of Windsor - this is a men-only event with certain requirements in the dress code!  The event was in aid of Thames Hospicecare, and Gerry is still accepting sponsorship for taking part.

Parkrun
12th Oct

27 CRC runners turned out on a beautiful, sunny, autumn morning at Black Park for a club Parkrun and got some great results.  The runners included most of the Junior section, the Couch to 5k Beginners group, the Improvers group and the Seniors.  The Beginners and Improvers showed what fantastic progress they have made through their courses to complete their 5k runs in some very impressive times.  Some of our seniors, like Bridget King who came in at 21:05 as 1st woman, were going for times and others like Rachel Harding and Kelli Dickinson were pacing our less experienced runners.  Well done everyone!

Steve Woodward 5k  Club Handicap Race
8th Oct

Picture
The venue for our second club handicap was Dorney Lake which has no lighting.  Headtorches did the job and Steve Woodward blazed his own trail to win for a second time in a handicap time of 34:42, which meant his 5k time of 25:42 was an improvement on last time.  Second was Sarah Watson at 35.46 (H7, 28.46), 3rd  Dave Tindal 35.58 (H11, 24.58), 4th  Sue Gauld 36.21 (H9, 27.21), 5th  Ed Wells-Cole 36.29 (H11, 25.29), 6th  Carol  Montgomery 37.01 (H10, 27.01), 7th  Kelli Dickinson 37.28 (H9, 28.28) and 8th  Adam Burke 37.50 (H17, 20.50). We managed not to get locked in and enjoyed the debrief and prize-giving (From Steve to himself) in the Pineapple pub.

Reading O2O 10k
6th Oct

This 10k was a scenic, flat, multi-terrain route that started in the meadow at Thames Valley Park in Reading and followed along the river before looping into town.  Both of the CRC members who entered managed PBs, Kelli Dickinson finally broke the hour to finish in 58:57 and Caroline Trowell finished in 1:02:31.

Congratulations to Sarah Walker who ran her first ever half marathon in an impressive 1:45.

29th Sept

There were three club members running the very scenic Windsor Half Marathon this year.  Rachel Harding was the first CRC member to cross the line in 1:53, followed by Nicole Strachan in 2:12, and Louise Street in 2:31.  Well done all!

Swallowfield Races - 5k, 10k, Duathlon
22nd Sept

The club was represented at every distance in these races in rural Berkshire.  The 5k was run on grass in the grounds of the impressive Swallowfield Hall.  The 10k was run on local roads (described as 'gently undulating' = lots of small hills and one big one!), sharing a route with the running sections of the Duathlon which broke off at the 7k mark to include an 18k bike ride, and rejoined for the final 3k.   Performance of the day went to ladies' captain Sue Gauld who smashed her personal best (PB) by over 2 minutes with a time of 25:11 in the 5km. It's hard to imagine that Sue took up running for the first time only 3 years ago. She is now recording times that are highly respectable for her age group at club level. Well done Sue - you are an inspiration! Lisa Fletcher is getting back into form with a 35:53 5km and Kelli Dickinson is returning from illness but had a great run to record a new PB of 61:07 in the 10k. Our men's captain, Gerald Cooper, put in a great performance to complete the duathlon in 1:39:59.

Helly Hansen Beauty and the Beast Relay
21st Sept

Picture
Ibet Allen hands on to Sarah Walker
Our ladies team finished in first place at the notoriously tough Helly Hansen Beauty and the Beast relay event on September 21. The race, held in West Wycombe park, is billed as the most gruelling event of its kind and entails running a full marathon with 'beastly' hills  as a 6-person relay. The team of Bridget King, Sarah Parfitt, Rachel Harding, Peta Bee, Ibet Allan and Sarah Walker were not only the first all-female team home, but finished second team overall, beating all but one of the men's teams.

TVARC 5k Summer Series

As guest hosts of the first race of the series we had no runners in Wargrave.

15 runners from CRC took place in the second event at Burnham Beeches and we had several PBs set in spite of the hills - Adam Burke was the first CRC member to finish in a PB time of 19:13, and Helen Philip got a new PB of 30:50.  All members finished in under 35 minutes.

The 3rd in the series was hosted by Marlow Striders at Hurley, it was a picturesque, fast, flat course which helped many of the 17 members who took part to set yet more PBs, and all members finished in under 34 minutes.  Adam Burke was again the first of the CRC members to cross the line, improving on his previous time to achieve 19:02.  Bridget King was the first female member to finish and she was 3rd woman overall in 20:30.  Peta Bee managed 22:26 and Rachel Harding achieved a new best time of 23:37. Dave Tindal and Ed Wells-Cole both broke 25 minutes for the first time with times of 24:30 and 24:48 respectively.  Kelli Dickinson (27:20), Tina Scanlon (29:40), Sasha Davies (30:14), Caroline Trowell (32:21), Fiona Coulter (33.31) and Joy Strzelecki (33:48) all managed to smash their previous best times.  This has proved to be a very successful event for the club!
The next in the series was the twisting but fast course hosted by Maidenhead AC.  14 members took part and almost everyone improved on their previous race time.  Adam continues to lead us over the line, equaling his previous best of 19:02. Ibet broke 20 minutes for the first time with a PB of 19:42. Satish Lawson (20:16), and Sarah Walker (23:42) achieved PBs, and Gerald Cooper put in his best performance this year to run 24:45. Daimian Mustard finished strongly on 25:45 and there were PBs for Sue Gauld (27:57), Sasha Davies (29:42) who broke half an hour for the first time along with Helen Philip (29:44), Caroline Trowell (30:54) and Fiona Coulter (32:40).
The penultimate race of the series was hosted by Handy Cross Joggers at Wycombe Rye - it was an extremely hot evening but ten CRC members managed to avoid wilting in the heat and put in solid performances.  Our guest runner, Steve Pennington came third overall in 17:43 and was the first in a CRC vest to cross the line.  Well done to Adam Burke (19:21), Peta Bee (23:53), Rachel Harding (24:05), Dave Tindal (25:02), Gerald Cooper (25:14), Ed Wells-Cole (26:58), Sue Gauld (28:42), Tina Scanlon (29:53), Helen Philip (31:20), and Fiona Coulter (35:18) for getting round.
The final race of the series was hosted by Datchet Dashers in the shadow of Windsor Castle.  Another very hot evening saw thirteen CRC members compete. Well done to Rachel Harding who put in a great performance to achieve a PB in those conditions!
